Nnamdi Kanu, the former leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), has refused to plead guilty to the 15-count terrorism charges presented against him by the Federal Government on Tuesday in Abuja. He said that the government had taken him by surprise with fresh claims late Monday night.
In a statement issued via his primary counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), Kanu accused the government of breaching the principle of a fair trial. Mr. Ozekhome said during the re-opened trial that his client could not plead to charges that he had not investigated for his defense because he did not have the necessary information.
“My Lord, Kanu isn’t aware of the charge at this time. He’s merely conversing with me. He is not guilty of any charges that he has not seen. The Federal Government is just infringing on the fundamentals of fair hearing. It has been ruled by this honorable court that the frail-looking Kanu in the dock not be allowed to meet his family,” he said.
Ozekhome went on to say that the material was not easily legible enough to support the latest charges against him. In order to visit him, I went to DSS, where I was almost stripped down. In addition, he requested that the arraignment be postponed until tomorrow so that his counsel could discuss the new accusation with him.
After hearing that Mr. Shuaib Labaran, representing the Federal Government, had made no objections to the delay, Justice Binta Nyako scheduled the arraignment for tomorrow. Before turning Kanu over to the Department of Social Services, the judge allowed him and his counsel to speak in court.
Prior to this, Kanu had complained to his counsel about starvation, a lack of clothing, and a rejection of his religious beliefs. Justice Nyako, noting that the prison facility is far from a five-star hotel, ordered Kanu to appear in court the next day in clean clothes, noting that the jail facility is far from a five-star hotel.
According to what was said, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court had authorized the request for a foreign counsel, Mr. Bruce Fein, to be present at the trial on the grounds of impartiality.
